Homework Policy

Homework Schedule & Policy

Dear Families of Room 203,

As your child enters third grade he/she will be expected to complete nightly homework and keep an organized homework journal.

I understand that some nights are busier than others, so I have arranged the homework assignments so that they are staggered throughout the week. With this flexibility this should give you plenty of opportunity to complete each assignment. As your child receives these assignments they will include more detailed directions. However, below is the planned homework schedule.

Monday: Reading log 15-20 minutes, Math Review, and paragraph writing are assigned – due Thursday

Tuesday: Reading log 15-20 minutes, Math Review, Math Weekly Challenge is assigned – due Friday

Wednesday: Reading log 15-20 minutes,Math Review, either a current social studies, science, grammar or vocabulary, alternated as needed. Typically a practice worksheet or topic review paper – due Thursday

Thursday: Reading log 15-20 minutes, Math Review, and a math review sheet– due Friday

Friday: Reading log 15-20 minutes and Math Review. (Be prepared to respond to the book you are reading during morning work on Monday.)

The reading log is assigned daily and due the following day.

**If your child is inconsistent with homework expectations a consequence will apply.

Although your third grader is much more mature and responsible, it is essential that parental support be offered and encouraged throughout the week. To assure that clear communication between teachers, students, and parents exists, your child will use a homework journal. Everyday your child will record the evening’s homework, and each night the journal needs to be signed by anyone who supervises his/her homework. Please feel comfortable to use the journal/homework folder as a vehicle for sending notes to me as it will be checked each morning.

Please be aware that your child’s homework should take about 30-45 minutes per night. If you notice your child becoming frustrated or taking much longer, please communicate this with me and I will be happy to offer alternatives.

There will also be some monthly projects assigned throughout the year. The homework schedule will be adjusted accordingly.

I hope this communicates the expectations for third grade homework. As always, please contact me with any questions. The homework schedule will begin as soon as our daily routine can be put into place.
